Meriden to West Hartford is about 20 minutes but the train to NYC is 2 hours. Anything north of New Haven is good for WHTFD but sucks for NY. South is the opposite. I use to live in Orange CA and work in LA. It was horrible. 5 hours round trip and it was only about 40 miles away. Just turned down 2 jobs in NY paying in the 250k range. I'm too old for that headache. Good luck, it's a tough decision.

I mean neither one is bad so they could both move around academically by a few points.

I grew up in Trumbull and our middle schools did the same thing. I went to Madison and sometimes Hillcrest was better and sometimes it wasn't.

No surprise here, BUT, this is a big but:

Car insurance rates: Our annual average rate is $1,553. In Florida, its $3,183, in Lousiana, $2,909, New York, $3,139. You could move to Maine and only pay $941. Source: Bankrate

Home insurance rates: Connecticut $1,244. Florida, $1,981. In tornado alley, Oklahoma, $3,659, The national average is $1,428 for a $250,000 dwelling. Source: Bankrate.

Flood insurance. Many Connecticut residents may be able to get by without flood insurance, but if you need it, we oddly have the second-highest rate in the nation at $1,469. This makes no sense, but.... source: Value Penguin.

You have to consider the hours you work and where in NYC you work. I’ve been doing the commute for over 20 yrs (mostly in the Bronx with a short stint in Manhattan) I leave around 5:30 and return 2-3pm . The trip is bearable but not without its frustrations. Taking the train to the Bronx doesn’t make sense time wise and even working in Manhattan would of required the shuttle, another train and a long walk, didn’t make sense time wise. What I’ve recommended to a few people is to stay in a local hotel and do the trip for the week and see if it’s something you want to do. FYI I’m in Milford a tad further.

Gabby, thank you for putting this out there , elder care was a mess 20 yrs ago when I was a recreational therapist for a LTC facility, and I'm facing placing my dad in short term rehab this week, and it scares me. I am going back and forth from Yale New Haven and let me tell you, the care THERE is bordering horrendous.

The hospital is filthy, the 3 ppl in his room are not getting the care they deserve, in fact, it's bordering neglect and that's at Yale. No washing up, barely any pain control, they will not help him eat despite the broken arm, call bells are placed where he can't reach it, urine placed next to his food, same dirty foot print on the floor for 3 days ....I really could go on.

I expect less from the rehab and that's terrifying.

That’s about supply and demand, not taxes. Miami real estate is insane and unaffordable for most, but taxes are low. What we need in CT is to start building more housing. Too many homes with 2+ acre lots and towns with no industry/commercial activity besides the local supermarket. We need smart development and infrastructure. Housing is unaffordable because we don’t have enough inventory in the areas where the jobs are located. Too many towns that will not approve more housing because “it will change the character”. That’s the whole point. The tiny NE town is unaffordable if nice or an economic backwater otherwise.

I live in the next town over at my in-laws house. My wife and I just played "house" on Sunday wandering through Milford to feel it out for ourselves. Still trying to figure out where we want to settle. But we also enjoyed how Milford felt. We like the downtown feel of Milford but enjoy the lot spaces in Orange and Woodbridge more. Trumbull also has some nice spots.
