100% ShopRite over Stop&Shop for life! Much better experience and prices in ShopRite.

They often have coupons or sales to cover the delivery fee and I'm not sure your cash flow but I always tried to place infrequent large orders to consolidate the orders I placed. They also have a subscription for unlimited deliveries I believe.

Not a store but I've had great experienced with FreshDirect. They deliver, have great selection, and is not just a shopper picking your stuff along with other people from local stores but is is from Fresh Direct, directly.

While I haven't been to the Summer St location Maruichi is a Japanese grocery store/deli. Great selection and definitely have Japanese essentials but not sure what you consider essential and if this will be a good option

Personally, I hold Target for pantry items and maybe a frozen treat and a thing of milk. Their fridge/fresh section is meh at best.

I think the answer to your unstated question is no, there is no walkable grocery store from your location. Well, other than Target on Broad Street. It's kind of a hike since it's on the sixth floor or whatever.
Alternatively, you can shop bougie at Maruichi Select on Summer Street across from Bar Taco. It's small but probably has the essentials.

Target has some groceries and is the closest if you're walking. A number of stores also deliver.

As others have mentioned, right now Stamford's numerous ShopRites and Stop and Shops may be your best bet, and a number near you are accessible by public transit:
Bus 311 will take you into the West Side, close to a Stop and Shop and ShopRite.
Bus 328 will take you to a ShopRite in Shippan.
Bus 331 will take you north to the one on Bedford Street.
Alternatively, there is a Target half a mile up the road from you that's not a far walk. I think it's generally a bit pricier than normal grocery stores, but it's definitely worth checking out too.

ShopRite on West Main or in Shippan. Stop and shop is always more expensive and the quality is just as good as shoprite

Stop and Shop a mile south on Route 1 seems to be your best bet. I’d walk there and Uber back while you’re car-less.
All the other marts nearer to you are c-stores.

I just realized you also said they’re Shun. I have a bunch of Shun knives that came with free lifetime sharpening. You can reach out to them to make arrangements and you just have to pay the shipping. I’ve done that several times too. It’s a pretty quick turnaround.

If you want to do them you self, I know Chef's Choice makes a home sharpener that does the 12 to 15 degree angle or if you cannot find someone to take them to.
ohnogirlbye t1_iro5o1p wrote
I don’t know if they do it but there is a Japanese grocery store downtown called Maruichi—worth a call to ask!

Thank you all for these suggestions! I'll check them out and try to stay hopeful. The problem is that options I checked in the past didn't do the 12 to 15 degree angles that Japanese knives require. Most do the 20 to 22 degree angles that German knives have. But maybe more people have Japanese knives now and the local services are more available. Fingers crossed.

I think Williams Sonoma does sharpening by inch if you're headed to Westport

LaRocca’s market in North Stamford sharpens knives.

Yes! There is a guy at the farmer’s market on Saturdays but that may be over now. It’s called Sky Sharpening.

I saw a TikTok about how a morning drive to work can clear your head, so while I work from home, I still drive around Stamford aimlessly from 7-8am.

I agree their fresh selection is not amazing but if you live downtown it is total lifesaver and the only easy option if you don't want to drive! I'm there every other day pretty much.
