You’re not familiar with the topic. The sustainable energy transition is well under way. You may only have a mainstream view of the issue which, granted, I don’t really see very nuanced coverage in mainstream news sources, but inside the energy industry, there’s no long term projection that doesn’t account for massive decline of fossil fuel emissions. Nuclear has its own issues. wind and solar have come to dominate renewable energy because of their favorable LCOE. if you’re interested in learning more, you can start with that search term.

I hope they ban TikTok in the United States. Or it gets sold to a US company. 45% of Americans have the app installed. This gives China GPS data on nearly half of Americans. And that's just GPS. They can run AI sentiment analysis on your videos and comments to tell your mood, who your friends are, what you're interested in, what your political leanings are. They can recommend anything they want to your feed and influence the opinions and attentions of our populace en-masse. It's too much control to hand over to an unfree foreign surveillance state.

A replacement for it will be created and people will have a new place to go viral. It's not TikTok they want necessarily, it's an app exactly like TikTok. Imagine "KitKot", a US competitor app that's functionally identical to TikTok. Why not use it? It does the same thing. It'll suck massively for people to rebuild their followers list, but hey, sometimes life is hard. Once it's up and running, and everyone is reestablished on the new app, no one will care anymore.

TL;DR: I love hearing about shelter animals finding new homes. It warms my heart. :)

This is exactly why it’s important to keep the myth going that the city has alligators in its sewers from people flushing small pet alligators down the toilet when they start becoming a hassle to own.

We have relied on this lie for generations to keep kids out the mother fucking sewers. I don’t care where you live. Tell your kids about NYC’s sewer gators today. Let that shit spread from playground to playground from sea to shining sea once more.

Bro literally I did this to a kid on a vacation one time and still think about it from time to time. The kids dad didn’t even seem concerned but the kid I grabbed was super panicked and I could see him getting dragged further and further out until I got him on my back and we swam with the waves back into shore.

Glad it was appreciated

I almost died one time in a similar circumstance as your second story.

I must have been like 4 or something, and we were hanging out at my mom's friend's pool. Her daughter was probably around 12 or 13, standing in the water and catching me when I jumped in - there was no deep end, but it was still over my head. After a bit she decided to get out, but I still wanted to swim so I jumped again and immediately started sinking.

I remember thrashing around a lot, but quickly realized it didn't matter. My mom and her friend were sitting on the deck chatting and didn't see me jump I guess - in reality it was probably less than 10 seconds til my mom noticed I was missing, but it felt way longer. Right as I'd literally accepted I was about to die, I saw the shadow of my mom stand up very suddenly and jump into the water. She must have pulled me out of the pool, but that's what I remember most vividly - a snapshot of her shadow against the sun, seen through the surface of the water.

I'm extremely lucky my mom was always so vigilant - lots of children die every year from drowning in pools while literally surrounded by adults. My sister and I started taking swim lessons right after that incident. Sorry to ramble, I'm a bit high and you just reminded me

Oh man, I wasn't able to grab my regulator a few times (I was able to collect it in my arm, but I didn't realise I did), panicked and after a minute shot up to the surface. This was in a diving pool at just a couple of meters so that was fine, but obviously wouldn't have worked in the ocean once I was at any real depth. I'm very glad I didn't try to touch the instructor, but that moment of sheer panic is real, and it's hard to control your response. It was embarrassing, and I was surprised by my response to it.

The claim was made about "pollution" from these ships. It did not even say what kind, because it would not have been as scary. It was a thought experiment which had some validity, but was questionable to say the least. Specifically it "found" that Sox and Nox pollution would be the same for the 16 ships and all the cars in the world. Not CO/ CO2. It was questionable, to say the least in 2009. Sulphur content of has been reduced significantly since then and it is certainly not the case anymore. Shipping does burn some nasty stuff and is a major polluter, no doubt. But exaggerated claims only serve to point fingers at everybody else. Obviously what we should do is kill all nuclear ambitions and just pipe oil from Russia to avoid having to ship it.
