Reply to comment by moderndukes in Why Don’t Baltimore City Schools Have School Buses? by GovernorOfReddit
We don’t get to go on any field trips. It costs about $2000 to rent a bus to go anywhere that isn’t within walking distance. Meaning we can’t take our kids to places like the science center, port discovery, the zoo, a planetarium, a theater, any fun locations to celebrate our successful scholars, that live science shit near fells, any trails or hikes that are 20mins out driving.
Not having a bus is an issue. It sucks that we cannot take them anywhere unless we fundraise money for it.

Paying people more who have no skills, in these areas, is wasting money. Its great when a person makes the attempt to learn, but most come to the job with no foundational training. All their education was in a liberal arts curriculum, which is not universally helpful.

Paying more is not a universal answer. Yes, pay competitive wage, but the number of young people I have had to try and train shows that little or no previous training in the basics of technical or mechanical topics, leaves a person sorely lacking. Most of the kids I have tried to train have no hands-on background. Not like the old days when most boys had their hands on repairing a car. Many of these skills are transferable. Understanding how to take things apart and put them back together is not taught in our schools. When I hear a trainee ask for a "flat head screwdriver" I know I am in trouble, as they have no training in the basics.

The climate for the past 35 yrs+ has been college college college is the only way you will be happy at work and get a high pay check. Vocational programs were cut, when the college high priests got to the school systems and sold them on a cheaper way to run a school. Have all students take the same chalk talk programs, and say they will go to elite colleges. This cut the need for small class technical programs.
The company I work for has been looking for welders for several years. We get a few, applicants, but most do not understand that its not a cushy office job. The complaining is very annoying. None have any experience or even outside interest in hands-on work. This leaves them with no assets for this type of work. A liberal arts education is not a universally useful curriculum. And taking a late teenager and trying to educate them in the ways of construction or other technical careers, is near impossible if they have had no earlier training. I bet no college will take on a kid, in their basket ball or football program who has never played ball before.

Agreed 100. Something is going on w a lot of these agencies. Lot of them like dot are pursuing some high minded bullshit and not focusing on the basics.

It’s a unique idea so I’m not trying to tear u down. But unfortunately making it regional (like Hatfield McCoy trails in WV) will make it too expensive for most of the riders in our city even Philly ny nj crews
Owning a dirtbike and trailer and truck and riding legally is a lot of money and work. When I had a boat I had to tow it down to slip and launch no way I was paying slip fees. If I had the option to jump in boat from house and cruise where ever no rules that make it lot cheaper all u need to buy is a boat

Some parks have evidence but they’re unlisted parks Down around linthicum Brooklyn area.
It’s also lot scarier to ride in woods high speed and do wheelies

Reply to High costs of three-year delay complicate efforts to move forward on Pimlico, Laurel Park redevelopment by GovernorOfReddit
Horse racing is a sport which has died. We need to stop pumping money in it. So many other great traditions have died, with out the same loss of valuable and scarce funding. The biggest use of horses, in MD are for riding schools. I would prefer the money go to establish intro riding schools for city school outings to get the kids on horses and ponies, than a race track.

You don’t ride obviously. Dirt biking legally at parks is a hobby id have trouble affording at my salary. It’s close to owning a small boat

It’s hilariously, tragically sad that buses, daily transportation and supportive staff aren’t on City school’s budget, casino money is supposed to be available, school bond issue money is in the millions, yet students still don’t have a lot of the basics, and terrible facilities in some schools. 🫣

Look at the back yard of the neighboring houses. They tell a lot about the neatness of the owner.
Many rush to hire Mr. Cheapy Repair to do brick work. Most pre 1900 row houses have lime mortar. It has a life span of about 130 yrs then starts crumbling. Not a problem but the mortar joints need to be re-pointed using lime mortar. Most quicky contractors use Portland cement mortar which is very hard and prevents moisture from passing through. Soft old bricks will then hold moisture and with winter freeze and thaw, the bricks will decay.
Insulate the attic first before windows. It is cheapest and the most important, then the under side of the first floor.
Parking is a problem esp for those not used to city living. No, the space in front of your house is not yours.

Patterson park is the answer. There's a reason why they have competitive bike races there.

How about, hear me out, LEAVING IT AS IS?! Dirtbikes already all over the road now.
It’s a crucial route back to west side from downtown. I commute from Wes side to work without that road me and lot of others would be screwed and add 20 min to our commute and we already live in city.
The people proposing solutions don’t even live in the area. r/BmoreDOT said they don’t write thinkpieces on the highway to nowhere and two weeks later promote a thinkpiece on the highway! Leave shit alone sometimes and get back to the basics
The people displaced aren’t magically going to be made whole. This whole highway to nowhere thing reeks of white guilt not gonna lie.

Its an idea that sounds good, to some, but would simply not be confinable. Look at how the approval of graffiti has not been able to be kept from spreading, like a cancer, to the rest of the city. I am all for vocational programs, including motorcycle repair, but to allow it to be part of an otherwise illegal and uncontrollable context would be unwise.
Not only that, but it would encourage the "whites only" motorcycle groups to demand their bit of the cash.
Lets pressure the Balt public schools to re-establish auto mechanics, and include motorcycles.
