Right because this shows people don’t understand percentages not that they don’t understand minority representation. When a lot of people say 20% of the US is trans they are just trying to express that it’s a minority not really that it is exactly 1 in every 5

“Does correcting misperceptions of group size change peoples’ attitudes on related issues? Current research suggests it does not. In a series of studies (one of which used a survey fielded by YouGov), political scientists John Sides and Jack Citrin attempted to correct inaccurate beliefs about the size of the U.S. foreign-born population, both subtly, by embedding the accurate information in a news story, and explicitly, by providing survey respondents with Census Bureau estimates. They found that while providing this information did somewhat improve people’s knowledge of the number of immigrants in America, they did not make people more supportive of immigration.”

Fun Fact: reservoirs in CA also feed western Nevada. Homes and businesses in Reno have had green lawns, very few water restrictions, and water features/parks/etc going this whole time. There are also very few water conservation requirements on buildings and homes. So Yea, a desert state wastes way more CA water than actual Californians.

In the US everything is huge, I live in Canada and while here everything is huge too, it doesn’t come close to the size of US properties

Yeah. That's what my students do. Love to discuss with then why it's not the way forward, haha

It's a visual check if there is still hidden data in your fit. If the residuals seem to be randomly distributed, it's a good first rough check that your model covers all the available data. Usually you find the residuals moving all in one, and then all in the other direction, looks a bit like a wave-y very noisy motion along the x axis.
There are more robust ways to check like Anderson darling if I'm not wrong, but the residuals are easily plotted and a good quick and dirty first check

Sure! Deciding which model to use a posteriori based on the shape of the data is definitely not ideal.

True. But even if you use some mix of polynomials it might be still better to argue why, rather than using an exponential here no?

This is beautiful data. Too many moving bar charts lately. Scatter plots are the most informative and most interesting.

Eyeballing it, it looks like there might be a lot of heteroskedasticity too, especially with one bed apartments which seem to be a bit all over the place, which probably affects the predictory power of the regression.

TIL: Ile-de-France can be as far as almost 100 km from the center of Paris.

There are several countries that have tens of millions of families so that's not really a clue

The bigger clue is the number of families. ;)

An interesting scholarly article I read some ago did the same to Paris and juxtaposed it to Detroit.

This and LOST are tied to be my most favorite shows of all time. They both literally changed my life in such a weird way.
