Good point! I think was more considering this within the context of a single dataset, without outside knowledge. If I read your example correctly (please correct me if I don't), the dataset described above would not contain evidence of X causing Y or if the dampening effect of Z is not complete X would correlate with Y (though perhaps weakly). Thought there may again be something I'm missing ;)

true. prices in coastal Maine have really shot up. but that's the same issue people in other states like Idaho have. I think things will eventually drop a lot if we have a recession. demand for vacation homes drops a lot during a recession. and many people who retire to Maine may be less than thrilled with the winters and it isn't the best place in terms of taxes. I love the state and would have a place there if it wasn't all the way across the country.

This is very informative but stop with the private prisons - these hold fewer than 5% of incarcerated people (excluding ICE detainees) and their use is on the decline.
