Reply to ELI5: If benzodiazepines are CNS depressants, why is it so hard to die from a overdose of them alone? by psychrolute
I just lost my best friend who was extremely depressed addicted to clonazepam and i think he did something like this in a way to suicide…the combined opiates and the benzo to stop his breathing. His mom heard a loud noise upstairs and never went to check on him till morning and found him dead… like buddy said above he was more mad about the loss of product than the attempt…. Thats a huge problem! I find that alarming and hope your doing better buddy! please seek psychedelics! i beg of all that are suffering from addiction and depression 🙏💔

Another fun answer is that motion is relative to your frame of reference. From the jumper's perspective, the Earth DOES move and its the jumper that remains still. Scientifically, both points of view are valid.

So if i stay on the same spot afloat for 12 hours would i technically be in another far away place

Reply to eli5 what does an inverter invert? by [deleted]
Historically, power was most often generated as alternating current AC and converted to direct DC for use.
It’s more difficult, and less common, to go the other way, so that became known as inversion.

In addition to the other answer: the strongest example you will likely every see is DC: lightning.

Every force has an equal and opposite force, so when you jump, the same force does, in fact, apply to earth. But the Earth is so large that the force applied from the jump is nowhere near enough to move the earth any measurable amount.

Reply to Eli5 if the universe is expanding, then why isn’t the earth, and everything in it (us) getting measurably bigger too? by Far-Contribution-632
Metric expansion is incredibly weak over distances smaller than galaxy clusters, so you just don't see any local changes. Gravity can easily overwhelm metric expansion, although if metric expansion continues to accelerate indefinitely, you end up with a "Big Rip" scenario.

It does move but the vast differences in the mass of the objects involved means that the mass of the Earth moves less than the width of an atom.

Technically, it does. But by such a small amount, we can't even measure it with the most precise tools we have. This is because the earth is very heavy compared to us, so the jump has a much bigger effect on us than it does the earth.

Viruses are not "a chemical". They are comprised of multiple "chemicals", if you want to call them that, including proteins and genetic sequences.
By the logic you're using here you might as well call a skin cell "a chemical".

Reply to Eli5 what exactly makes fat so delicious? by Smite76
Evolution. Fat is the most calorie dense food, so any organism that likes fat is much more likely to eat it, get more calories, and survive times of scarcity. Over time, that results in basically every creature that's capable of metabolizing fat finding it delicious.
Too much fat is bad for you but that's a *very* recent development...for essentially all of history (and still only for a small fraction of the world today) calorie deficit is far more likely to kill you than calorie excess. There hasn't been enough time for this to evolve back out.

Reply to ELI5: Why does every mail subscription seem to have an unsubscribe button? I have seen this even for the scammiest subscriptions. by OldDew
In addition to some other points. Spam detection systems that email providers use employ a scoring system. For each element of an email that is associated with spam the score goes up. For each element that is associated with legitimate email the score goes down. Things like including a real physical address of the sender’s company, phone numbers, etc are associated with legitimate email. Having a legitimate unsubscribe link helps convenience the spam filter software that the email is legitimate and increases the likelihood that it gets delivered. The vast, vast majority of all email is spam and is blocked outright. Only the “well crafted” spam gets through to your inbox.

Reply to ELI5: How does a DNR work? by HalloweenLover
I'm a nurse at a hospital.
DNR is do not resuscitate, so if you have a DNR, and the people around caring for you know you have a DNR, and no one from your family is trying to argue with the DNR, the they will not start CPR/BLS/ACLS (chest compressions, rescue breaths, intubation, defibrillation, meds, etc.) if you stop breathing or your heart stops beating.
A living will is a separate document and you do not need one to have the other, but they often go together as they are typically considered when someone is nearing end of life or has a quality of life compromising condition. A big reason for that, is the more sick or aged you are, the less likely a resucutation attempt will be successful.
Whether you want to be a DNR now or not, discussing your wishes for what kinds of medical care you want should you become unable to make decisions for yourself with your loved ones is a conversation you should have early and at regular intervals. You can make a living will with resources like the 5-wishes or other tools. Or you can designate a MDPOA to make those decisions for you.
Making sure you're family/chosen family knows what you want and making sure they will honor it is more important than any document. Families can and do override DNRs (thanks to a highly litigious healthcare system/country, I'm in the US). If you have documents, make sure your family knows where they are and make sure your primary care provider has them too.

Fat carries flavor. Pure fat, like vegetable oil or shortening, is actually kind of unpleasant to eat. But many of the aromatic compounds that make food taste good or interesting can be easily stored in fat. This is why, for example, garlic butter will do a better job flavoring a dish than just tossing some garlic into the pot. (Even when you do cook with fresh garlic, the standard procedure is to first sauté it in oil. Why? So the oil picks up the garlic flavor). On top of this, fat is very good at coating our mouths, giving a more intense and longer-lasting experience of those flavors.
Especially when it comes to animal products, it might even be more accurate to say that "fat is flavor." The aromatics that make beef taste distinct from pork, for example, are mostly contained in the fats of those animals.

I'll add the DNF- Do Not Filtrate. Meaning no dialysis at all. Even if the person is in acute renal failure and it could save their life.

So an inverter generator would convert the raw generator AC output into DC, then convert it back into AC output as you described, 'cleaning up' the raw AC current so it is safer for electronic devices?

Reply to ELI5: why can’t someone who is light in weight punch as hard as someone who is heavier? by Any_Branch_4379
If you want two objects of unequal mass to impart the same force the lighter one has to be moving a lot faster than the heavier one.

That doesn't require a hack. That just requires someone to know your address.
They just have to hand over your address up spam companies or use one of those revenge websites that automatically subscribes an address to thousands of newsletters and stuff

Reply to comment by avalon1805 in ELI5: How do we continue to grow seedless fruit if they don't contain seeds? by CuriousHuman111
well, most of them don't, but they would if they were fertilized. It would look like this
Interestingly, pineapples almost never reproduce by seeds. Even in the wild, most of their reproduction is vegetative. Why? Their huge, spiny fruits are adapted for being eaten by the extinct megafauna of South America. Ground sloths, Gomphotheres, etc. When those animals went extinct, pineapples and their relatives lost their usual means of dispersion and had to limp by on occasional lucky seed spread and vegetative growth...until humans started growing them.

I used to trip off benzos in a way that scared anyone around me at the time.I would be absolutely convinced as if I was in psychosis that things were real. Then when I came down 5 or 6 days later I would hear the stories from everyone, people I knew and stares from people I didnt know, not remembering any of it.I also used to take em when I drank and was guaranteed no hangovers whatsoever as I'd be so out of it for 3 or 4 days,by the time I came round the any hangover would be gone. How I survived that time I dont know, now I'm glad I did and the rattle of benzo's is second in ferocity to only one other drug in my experience and that's heroin and it's a very close second.

Reply to comment by CrookedGrin78 in ELI5: If benzodiazepines are CNS depressants, why is it so hard to die from a overdose of them alone? by psychrolute
The reason is these types of drugs (GHB and ethanol) both interact with your brains GABA system which is the bodys inhibitory neurotransmitter. Your body uses it to essentially calm itself. This also has effects on heart rate and respiration. this is why they are dangerous. Since the both activate this system they essentially relax your body to the point where your heart can stop pumping(cardiac arrest) or your lungs stop functioning on their own (respiratory arrest)

Other "depressant" drugs also have dangerous interactions since the systems they work on can also have similar effects on the same systems even though they work using different neurotransmitters, eg being heroin and alcohol. They activate different systems in the body, however these systems have similar effects such as decreased heart rate & lowered respiration. which is why they can also be a dangerous combination.

This is also the reason these drugs are so physically addictive and cause dangerous withdrawl symptom. Since they work with such critical natural bodily responses, when you get dependent on them your body stops operating these systems normally and when the chemical substitute (let say alcohol in the example) is no longer present/available the system goes haywire since the body is no longer capable of regulating the system which is why ppl can suffer strokes or heart attacks if they attempt to detox without medical supervisions.
