It really depends on the headphones and how big the modding community is for it. Head-fi typically has a ton of comprehensive guides and information, like this thread for the T50RP. Could be a bit overwhelming though.

^(Disclaimer: some people go a bit overboard trying to min/max their headphones. Take everything with a grain of salt.)

Are analog eq, crossover, and using chip capacitors the same? If not, can you explain what analog eq and crossover are?

Edit: I think I figured it out. Just to clarify, both crossover and using chip capacitors are forms of analog eq, but the latter only applies to hybrid iems?

Complete noob here, is there a place/way to learn how to mod headphones and what the best equipment to use is? I'm guessing just google/YT but the idea of it sounds cool as shit

I've had 2 headphone problems and one was DCA but I rarely see any mention of DCA having issues so I think they're rare.

1st was a hd650 driver that died after a few years.

2nd was a DCA Aeon X Closed who's earcup would crash into into the hinge arm preventing it from swiveling and fitting to my head so I returned those.

Yes, they can use some analog EQ inside the IEM (with or without multiple drivers, Crossover=EQ) to change the sound or a DSP (digital EQ).

The Mdr-Z1R is “easy” to drive. It sounds fine out an iPhone dongle. But with this kind of source the bass can really be a little boomy and slow (despite being super fun like this). Put it after the Mojo 2 or, even better, a Burson amp and will get ver fast, precise and punchy bass (although not as punchy as with the HE6se or a Focal Clear). The bass is much better than the Edition XS, which I’ve had and have great regard for.

I liked it better then the non-EQef LCDX 2021. It’s not an easy headphone, doesn’t wow you at first listen, but it’s the favorite in the many “endgame hp’s” I’ve tried.

Someone else already posted it, but i'll just echo it here: i really recommend checking out the filters because this sounds like a classic filter clog issue. You can kinda clean them with q-tips and alcohol as a first step. That might be enough to fix it. Or not. Who knows

Being the impulsive irresponsible little kid I am, I've ordered the hexa as well, but the zero came from Amazon immediately, the hexa still needs to be shipped by shenzen audio....

Until I have the chance to try them both I give any recommendations

I recently got the T50RP used and I agree, they’re amazing! Especially for the price and because of its modding potential. I slapped some Alpha pads on mine, lined the cups with a couple of cents worth of felt, taped the bass vents, which turned them into bass cannons.

I believe the reason why they don’t get recommended much is since they do require a decent amp. The Apple dongle is NOT enough, but the Qudelix 5k pairs well with it. Unbalanced is fine as well.

Another reason is the stock tuning is kinda meh. Great mids, but that’s pretty much it. And they can get fatiguing after a bit. I highly, highly recommend them as well… but only if you plan to mod them eventually and have a powerful amp.
