Reply to AI and Schools by SnaxFax-was-taken
I agree wholeheartedly with this, though I am unsure of how the people who actually control curriculum in schools will receive these types of ideas.

Reply to comment by scooby1st in When people refer to “training” an AI, what does that actually mean? by Not-Banksy
That's an important clarification. We understand 100% of every individual building block that goes into designing and training a network. What we do not fully understand is how putting billions of those small elements together results in what looks like some form of intelligence.

Reply to The Limits of ASI: Can We Achieve Fusion, FDVR, and Consciousness Uploading? by submarine-observer
Well, it's not quite known to us what the true limitations of physics are. AI may see whole new systems that we haven't even thought about, but it also may not, so as of right now it's mostly speculation.

I agree, but those aren't the only two choices.

this guy is seriously advocating for being willing to engage in nuclear war with major global powers over developing advanced AI models, simply because he thinks these models will inevitably kill everyone (not a guarantee despite his claims). A nuclear war would kill billions of people, period. Men, women and children, just like the children he mentions as potential victims of AI. The idea that it could be justified as somehow protecting against hypothetical threats from AI is crazy talk.

I agree, but its hard to tell. We could see it as early as this year to be honest. But it could also be 20 years if some unexpected problem comes up.

So the point of UBI is to give a basic income to live, not give people disneyland money
But it would also be great if people had money besides that LMFAO. You trying to paint it as a bad thing is one of the funniest responses I have seen to UBI. People have more money to spend on entertainment = more entertainment is created. They can make Disney planet
You are scared of a future where people are not living paycheck to paycheck, and can spend money on leisure? You think that is not sustainable?
Please dude, you have been brainwashed badly. Society doesn't have to be that way, there is no lack of space or resources on earth :)
instead of trying to maintain the current shit system, we can improve things :)

I actually have a good deal of respect for him. He's spent years working on big issues long before most people took it seriously.
But in this case, I think its misguided. Maybe I'm wrong. He has put a lot of thought into it.
I just wanted to point out the irony.

Currently, AI research for large models (such as ChatGPT) is expensive since you need large data centers to train and run the model. Therefore, these powerful models are mostly developed by companies that have a profit incentive to not publish their research.
A well known non-profit called LAION has made a petition that proposes a large publicly funded international data center for researchers to use for training open source foundation models ("foundation model" means its a large model used as a base for more specialized models, open source means that they are freely available for everyone to download). It's a bit like how particle accelerators are international and publicly funded for use in particle physics, but instead we have large data centers for AI development.

Everything happens at the margins, the people who are working now and can’t afford going to DL will want to go if UBI allows them to.
And they are much more than DL can accommodate…

If we completely disregarded ethics, I believe we would have passed the point of Singularity already. The rate at which we get there is of a little importance. Consciousness is the most powerful force in the universe and I believe we are being reckless, far more reckless than we ever were with nuclear power. You fail to see the ramifications.
