TIL that the redwood tree the Julia Butterfly Hill lived in for 2 years in the 1990’s was badly damaged by vandals in 2000 who cut almost halfway through the tree with a chainsaw. A bracing was made to keep the tree stable and it will likely survive.

TIL Universal Studio's Colonial Street set has been home to Desperate Housewives, Psycho, Leave It To Beaver, The Munsters, The Hardy Boys, The Burbs, Dragnet, Delta House,Nancy Drew, The House Of the Seven Gables and more, all on the same "street". Built in the 1950, it remains in use today.

TIL: Frank Slide, 44 MILLION tons of rock fell in one of the largest landslides in Canadian history back in 1903. It partially buried a town and killed 70-90 people. Also, a horse, Charlie. Survived for a month underground, only to die after being overfed oats and... brandy.

TIL of the Pig War, a border dispute between the US and the UK, around Vancouver Island (present-day Canada) and Washington State. The only casualty was a pig, owned by an Irish farmer, which was shot by an American farmer for eating his potatoes. Both countries deployed military troops.

TIL Hawaii is the best place on earth to see rainbows. There are words for Earth-clinging rainbows (uakoko), standing rainbow shafts (kāhili), barely visible rainbows (punakea), and moonbows (ānuenue kau pō). The rainbow is seen as a symbol of transformation and a pathway between Earth and Heaven.

TIL in 2003, 12yo Auri Allen was featured on Ripley's Believe It or Not due to his massive size, nicknamed Baby Shaq. By 2006, he was regarded as one of the top 5 basketball players in the country, until a car crash paralyzed him. He later became a Head Coach and founded his own basketball academy.

TIL about the Kyujo Incident that occurred on Aug 14, 1945 where several Japanese officers occupied the Japanese Imperial Palace in an attempted coup of the Emperor to prevent him from surrendering to the Allies. They murdered several people and when their plot failed, they committed suicide.
