TIL that when a cat has a flat face (such as a Persian), that is actually a deformity. Breeders, however, are able to find ways of altering the cat’s genetics by choosing who they breed with. They do this because so many people gravitate to the smushed in face.

TIL about Wenceslao Moguel (nicknamed "The executed one"), a Mexican soldier under Pancho Villa who was sentenced to death after being captured but survived the execution by firing squad after being shot 8 times, and then once in the head as a coup de grâce.

TIL there is a genetic disorder many people have with something called Lipoprotein (a), and it puts people at high risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and aortic stenosis. It’s 100% genetic, can’t be corrected, and can only be treated with aggressive cholesterol control.

TIL that as President-Elect, US Pres. James Buchanan improperly wrote to a Supreme Court justice asking him to vote pro-slavery in the Dred Scott case. The court would rule 7-2 that Scott was a possession, not a person, and denied his petition for freedom

TIL when it was discovered in 1963 that the Winchester manuscript of Le Morte d'Arthur was indeed Thomas Malory's, John Steinbeck caught wind of it and decided to translate it into modern English. Ultimately he abandoned the project, but what remained was published after his death.

TIL Arabic numbers have only existed in their present form since about the 10th century. Only a few texts using Arabic numerals appeared outside of Italy until the late 15th century. It wasn't until the mid-16th century that Arabic numbers were in common use in most of Europe
