TIL that in 1889, the Brazilian military, alongside slave-owning elites, organized a coup to overthrow emperor Pedro II for abolishing slavery. In response, a group of freed slaves organized themselves into a militia known as the Black Guard in order to guarantee the safety of the Imperial Family.

TIL the song 'Yankee Doodle' was used by British soldiers before the Revolutionary War to mock American soldiers, stereotyping them as rural simpletons who would think putting a feather in their caps would make them 'Macaroni' (i.e. cool), but was later used by Americans as an anthem of defiance.

TIL During the Second Punic War, it's been suggested that upwards of 300,000 Roman soldiers were killed by Hannibal's army. At the Battle of Cannae alone, about 20% of Rome's fighting age men were killed (up to 70k), and by the end of the war, 1 in 6 of Rome's adult male population was dead.
