TIL In Confucianism, there are five grades of mourning obligation, depending on one's relation to the person that died. The death of one's mother or father requires 27 months of mourning while second cousins or first cousins once removed only require 3 months of mourning.

TIL. The Battle of Tanga also known as the battle of the bees, It is a failed attack on German East Africa by a british indian expeditionary force. The 98th infantry battalion were attacked by swarms of angry bees and broke up. The bees attacked both sides troops hence the name.

TIL Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, who started the persecution of Catholics, died in 1616 and for many centuries it was believed to be from over-eating tempura, a dish invented by Catholics during Lent while they were visiting Japan in 1543, which was the same year the Shogun had been born. (Maybe Cancer)

TIL that when Jack Grimm tried to find the Titanic in 1980, he planned to take a monkey called Titan that was trained to point to the wreck on a map. The monkey was left behind when scientists objected. Grimm never found the wreck, despite his sonar traveling right over it.

TIL that Ben S. Cauley, Jr. was the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed singer Otis Redding & 6 other people in 1967. Cauley took off his seat belt shortly before the crash. He managed to cling to a seat cushion for 20 minutes, until a rescue boat pulled him from the freezing lake waters.

TIL DNA transfer does not only occur "vertically", that is, from parent to progeny. There is also a form of DNA transfer known as horizontal or intracellular DNA transfer, which consists in a piece of DNA being transferred from the genome of one cell to that of another—including between species.
