TIL that Mattiedna Johnson, born to Mississippi sharecroppers in 1918, used techniques she’d used to make things like butter, jam and soap on her childhood farm to develop techniques to capture and preserve molds for research that eventually helped in the development of drugs to fight scarlet fever.

TIL Jason Everman, former Army Ranger and Green Beret, was Nirvana's original second guitarist and can even be seen on the Bleach cover, although he doesn't perform on the album. He later briefly joined Soundgarden as Hiro Yamamato's successor on bass.

TIL that the talipot palm produces the world's largest flower cluster (inflorescence) containing one to several million flowers. It grows up to 25m tall, takes 30 to 80 years to reach maturity to flower and then dies immediately afterwards, having drained all its nutrients in the process.

TIL During the 1966 World Cup final between England and West Germany, England were ahead in extra time, and striker Geoff Hurst tried to hit the ball as far into the stands as possible to waste time. Instead, he mishit the ball and sent it into the top corner of the German goal. England won 4-2.

TIL one of the paintings used as set dressing for the home in the film Stuart Little was a long lost 1920s painting by Róbert Berény, Sleeping Lady with Black Vase. The painting wasn’t identified for a decade after the films release, when an art historian was watching the film with his daughter.
