TIL American writer Jack Kerouac served on SS Dorchester which was torpedoed by a German U-boat on 3 February 1943. Kerouac would have also been on the ship during the attack, but for a telegram he received from coach Lou Little, asking him to return to Columbia University to play football.

TIL: The final night of women's figure skating in 1994's Winter Olympics is the 6th highest rated TV broadcast in US history. Remembered for the Kerrigan-Harding subplot, 48.5% of all households with a TV watched the final. Since then, no other broadcast has matched that rating.

TIL extreme emotional shock can lead to a dangerous condition cause takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as "broken heart syndrome". They say 2% of all acute coronary syndrome hospitalizations (where blood flow to the heart is restricted unexpectedly) are caused by this condition.
