Okay so for the record, there is trash and recycling pickup every weekday, not just Monday. The workforce they would have to have to get it all done one day of the week for a city this size would be insane.

Night work isn't likely for both the reasons you mentioned and because people would go apeshit over the noise.

Pittsburgh public transit isn't awesome but it's not nonexistent either. Everyone keeps pointing to Uber, but sell the car and use transit and walking as your top modes of transportation. Use cabs or rideshare when you have no other option, or buy a cheap used bike to augment your options if you feel safe riding it.

You can definitely still get around and save a ton of money doing it. It just requires making the decision to do so.

They HAD always been patient and kind to me until a recent visit! I went in; there was no one in line, and two women sitting at the two windows, so I walked up to one -- and one of the women snarked at me "Wait until you're called. Read the sign. Reading is important" and pointed to one small sign amid the million other things on the wall that said "Wait until called." I had to laugh because it was so ridiculous. There was no one else there! But once I was called up, they were friendly and helpful again. That was bizarre.

Personally I feel like SEPTA's been doing what they can to get the word out there. They have been talking about the bus revolution work since they first started the process (which was quite some time ago).

I do think they should have been putting the signs up at bus stops and on the buses earlier than they did, though. I've been seeing them recently, but many of the open house discussions have already happened.

That said, having attended one of the open house discussions -- people are not listening to anything SEPTA is saying or spending even half a second listening to the reasoning behind the redesign. Nothing is final, but I have to say that what's been proposed lines up quite well with good transit design principles, especially given the budget constraints that SEPTA has. But all anyone on the calls wants to do is scream about how their much-too-long, 87-turn-having, never-on-time route is being removed. Well, yeah, it is, because you can't run a reliable bus network that way. And there is simply no way SEPTA can sustain the (already unreliable) bus network it has with the ridership it's got.

It also amazes me how many people don't know that the first transfer has been free on SEPTA for two years already. OMG I WILL HAVE TO TRANSFER IT'S GOING TO COST MORE -- well, yes, you may have to transfer, but no it won't cost more, and the whole point of the new approach is guaranteed regular reliability on the main lines. So overall it should be a much more reliable system.

There are reasonable accessibility concerns about having to increase transfers, and that requires more attention IMO.

Ask up front and be polite. If they don't allow dogs, you can politely ask if there is anything you could do (pay a larger pet deposit, show proof of training, etc). If they say no, just move on. You may have better luck if you look at small house rentals rather than apartments.

Please do NOT become one of those people who abuses the emotional support animal rules to force a dog into a building that doesn't allow them. Respect that owners and other renters alike may prefer not to have a dog in their building either for reasons of allergies or not wanting to listen to a dog howl all day long.

Yes, you're understanding correctly.

I don't know that you'll get anywhere, but you could try calling SEPTA Key customer service. Maybe if you explain that you were confused about how the Key wallet works versus the debit card functionality they'd consider giving you a refund. Probably not, but, it might be worth a try.

The good news, ish, is that your fare money won't expire if you register the Key card. The card itself will expire in a couple of years, but if you still haven't used the fare money by then you can have it transferred to a new Key card. So you could try to look at this as paying ahead on a whole bunch of SEPTA rides. The system has its problems, of course, but its reach is pretty extensive.

In case it's not clear - any money you put on the card using a fare machine or the SEPTA Key website will NOT be available for anything but paying SEPTA fares even if you activate the debit card functionality. They are separate pots of money, if you will.

I'm also not sure how much longer the debit card functionality will be available. It was an interesting and well-intended idea - many Philadelphians are unbanked and the thought was that this would give them a way to have a debit card without a bank account - but in practice almost no one uses it.

  • Report this via the SEPTA Transit Watch app

Might also be worth raising to whatever councilperson's district the stations are in. I'm personally torn as I could 100% see this as the result of some dipshit contractor putting tape up before painting/cleaning and forgetting to take it back down, but it could also be some slightly more enterprising low-level criminals. Either way it shouldn't be allowed to stay.

I can't tell if you've gotten incredibly unlucky or I've gotten incredibly lucky or what.

I've been having vehicles inspected in this state every year for 20+ years and never run into an issue. Multiple garages, city, rural, dealer, you name it.

I think it's great to have young folks involved in government at this level. And there is some legitimate criticism in this piece for sure. But it's awfully rose-colored toward city council, for sure. I suspect that if the author had spent his time working in city hall he might have some things to say about city council.

That having been said, good for him for getting involved.
