My lease is up in a few months and all of my roommates are moving away for different reasons. I'm 25, work a remote job and my girlfriend will be moving in with me so the next place I live, I want to stay for a while.

I'm currently in Cambridge/Somerville. I love being able to walk everywhere so I don't want to get a car again. I'm from the south and really enjoy living in the Northeast. Up to this point, I've only lived in Texas (Austin, Houston) and now Boston for the last year and a half.

Boston is nice but it's getting too expensive. Here are some of the cities I've thought of:

  • Chicago - Cheaper cost of living, don't need a car, good art/museums/culture
  • Philadelphia- Cheaper cost of living, probably don't need a car, good art museums/culture, east coast/close to NYC and Boston, BUT crime (?).
  • Pittsburgh- Much cheaper CoL, can live car-lite, some good art/culture, close to nature BUT rainy weather, pollution, less to do.
  • Providence, RI- slightly cheaper, still in NE BUT would need a car, much smaller than Boston, less to do.
  • Portland, ME- slightly cheaper, close to nature, some art/culture, BUT would need a car, less to do
  • Albuquerque, NM- Much cheaper, close to nature, great food, great weather, some good art/culture BUT would definitely need to rely on a car, less to do, opposite side of the country. This one is definitely a wildcard but I've spent a lot of time camping and travelling around New Mexico including Albuquerque and I love it. Maybe not to live but I think it's beautiful.
