Incredible is right. I was expecting a bummer episode, but it became one of the best of the whole series. Teddy Perkins still rates as one of my top episodes.

The entire final season is still on my mind. My girl and I talk about it often. Especially the Popeyes part bc her family used to own some.

As someone who loved A Goofy Movie as a kid, and Atlanta as an adult; this episode hit on so many levels. An unexpected gem.

Nah. Darius saw how happy his friends were. Finally living the life they’d been working so hard for, after all the shit they’ve been through, and I think that’s why he smiles at the end. He’s relieved and happy that he isn’t in the tank. It’s real and it’s good. (Plus you can faintly hear sirens in the background).

As someone who can tell you about all the deep fascinating political battles of the studio at the time between Katzenberg and Eisner and all that, the first 1/3 of the episode still had me questioning if some things were real! Lol.

As an avid, long-time A Goofy movie fan, this episode really broke me down. Totally believed it was real at first, then after finding out that it was fictional, still broke me down because I can see something like this absolutely happening. I drive by the lake in Castaic, mentioned at the end, on a daily basis for work. After watching the episode, until I knew the truth, I would feel so awful driving by it. Great episode!

Great episode. I legit laughed the fuck out loud when that exec in the “documentary“ did his Goofy impression.

It's all a dream that was a dream the whole series was, but he was in the same part of the dream that they had been in the whole series. So while he is going to jail he is also still in a dream. Judy was always thick.

Atlanta will be talked about in the same regard as the wire in future.

A 10/10 show with one slightly weird (albeit still great) season that didn’t have the ratings while it was airing.

Ozarkii t1_iycb7sm wrote

Exactly. It will only get appreciated in the future when specific moments of specific episodes will give the series some traction and well-deserved exposure.

There's some truly absurd humor in some episodes but that's what makes it so great.

WAIT THAT SHIT WAS FAKE/…I had convinced myself it was for 40 min and then was like no they definitely switched it up and wanted to tell a story and then was like I won’t even look it up il suspend my belief but omg

If you want a imo satisfying explanation why the goofy movie is a "black" movie I recommend this actual short documentary video about the goofy movie

Tl;dw one of the main character artists for the goofy movie was a black woman who infused a style to some of the characters that resonated with a lot of black youth.

Can this episode be watched coherently if you’ve never watched Atlanta before?

11

HeadsUpKrebenUp t1_iycu2lp wrote

You can definitely just watch this episode! It doesn't follow any of the show's main characters at all, and is a stand-alone story. Although I highly recommend watching the entire season at some point too.

21

AurelianoTampa t1_iycu6tp wrote

Yes. Never seen anything else in the series and this one was a stand-alone that didn't require any extra information. Apparently there are some references to other episodes (B.A.N. is apparently a running gag of a fake network), but the episode itself doesn't require any other knowledge.

FWIW, my search algorithm has been all kinds of odd since watching it. I guess I'm not the typical Atlanta viewer, so now the algorithm doesn't know what to throw at me.

I liked bits and pieces, I just felt that the standalone pieces should have existed outside the series. The one about trini to da bone just doesn’t belong. It should have been a separate short. I watch for the characters, so it just felt like being bait-and-switched. “Now that we’ve got your attention, watch this other story; we’ll get back to Atlanta another time.”

visionaryredditor t1_iycygh7 wrote

the consumerism of Black culture by white people. This is one of the overachieving themes of the season and the main theme of the episode. The boy was raised by a Black nanny and he seems interested in Black culture like we see him watching The Proud Family and he genuinely doesn't feel out of place on her funeral, his dad listens to hardcore rap, his mom watches a Black woman doing a make up tutorial and she comes to the funeral with hoop earrings and a Teflar bag. and still, there is some type of hesitation from the parents' side. we see his mom discussing if they should immerse the kid into the Chinese culture because it's "relevant" now. and that's why Chet Hanks is in the episode, he basically is an extreme example of what the kid would grow into.

relations between capitalism and Black people. Basically every episode of the season is about it one way or another. But in Trini 2 Da Bone we see that the nanny basically had to abandon her own kids so she could earn money by working for white family.

I have always loved that movie. My favorite Disney movie hands down. I’m glad it’s getting more spotlight. Wish it got a better showing for its 25th anniversary than a blu ray and some tiny back packs.

I remember seeing this being aired on TV in Bahrain while it was still in the cinema in the UK. Some countries really didn't care about piracy.

Also, what's the big deal with this Atlanta episode? Should I watch it even if I've never seen the rest of the show?

4

OathOfFeanor t1_iydczpn wrote

Honestly then they are right you might not like the final season

I totally feel what you mean, but Atlanta just isn't like other shows

Those episodes that don't fit, some of them are genius. The Goofy Movie episode is one of those.

But your characters aren't even in it.

This is Donald Glover truly getting the freedom to do his thing, and he does it well. But he doesn't conform to the expected mold of a sitcom story arc.

2

wjkovacs420 t1_iydhq0z wrote

I think it’s crazy to say those episodes aren’t Atlanta. The fun of the show is the surreal world they’ve built. I don’t think the appeal was ever about the journey the main characters go through, rather them just interacting with the Springfield-esque world they’re in. And those episodes delivered on the weirdness everyone watches for.

8

Johnny_Fuckface t1_iydki0e wrote

I’m glad Atlanta is over. It never knew what it wanted to do with any of the characters and was mostly distracted by conceptual episodes that had nothing to do with anything.

Yep - I started watching Atlanta because I'm a huge fan of Donald Glover, but now I'm also a huge fan of Lakeith Stanfield.

He's one of those actors where I talk about when he wins an Oscar, not if (the other one I believe this about is Adam Driver - called it in Season 1 of Girls).

Let's also shout out Brian Tyree Henry -- I think a big part of Atlanta's vibe is due to how Paper Boi manages to be both calm and incredulous about all the surreal things happening around them.
