So this is more of a: today I learned I have been f’ing up everyday for the past 30 odd years.
My whole life no parent or hairdresser ever said anything about my hair type, they just treated it like every other hair and styled it in whatever way was currently trendy (straight or blow wave).
Well I finally started questioning my hair type as since I did the greatest shave last year I found my hair can be quite curly after washing it. Found a new more experienced hairdresser who confirmed my suspicions that yes I do in fact have CURLY hair.
This means that for 30 years my curly hair has been brushed daily and treated like any other hair type which is a huge no no. It is no wonder my hair is so damaged and has been falling out so much. I feel like such an idiot.
TLDR: found out after more than 30 years my hair is CURLY
EDIT: to answer some repeating questions/comments:
-
I admit in my post that I feel like an idiot, it is a TIFU for a reason.
-
My hair was too long and thick to wait to dry so my routine was to towel dry, brush and put up in a ponytail or plait and often this wasn’t done while standing in front of a mirror. My morning routine was brush hair and put up in ponytail or plait, also often not done in front of a mirror most of the time. So majority of the time if I was looking at my hair it looked thick and wavy.

I am frustrated with my hairdressers because i tried multiple times to discuss what I could be doing differently to help improve the health/condition of my hair and all they would do is try to sell me expensive shampoo and conditioner.
-
I suspect my mum is in denial about her having curly hair as well based on some comments she made about her own hair. She brushes and straightens her hair each day.

Once I have given my hair time to recover from it’s horrible life of daily brushing and i have gotten used to styling it as curly, I will hopefully come back with a before and after pic for those interested/asking.
Honestly did not expect this post to get any attention and it has been reassuring hearing how many people have had a similar experience.
